Never Underestimate the Power of Delegation

Is it time to delegate?

Are you feeling the strain of “Too Much Work and Not Enough Time”? Chances are you do and suspect it is time to delegate but are not quite sure. There are some signs you can look for in order to determine if it is time to delegate:

  • You are working late in fear of missing deadlines
  • You are taking work home to complete
  • You feel like you are drowning in a river of paperwork
  • Your idea file is screaming for attention
  • You are cashing out your leave time because you do not have time for a vacation
  • You feel like you are not growing professionally
  • You have not had time to focus on “Growing Your Business”

If you agreed with two or more of the above statements…Yes, it is time to delegate!

One of the biggest concerns expressed when it is time to delegate is that most people think they do not have time. Yes, it is true it does require an invested amount time on your part. Do not let that feeling sway your decision to delegate. Spending the amount of time to train someone to take over the task for you will ultimately save time in the end.

If you are new to delegating it will feel uncomfortable at first. You may think you will look bad if it is not done correct. Truth is, if it is not done correct the first time, nobody will ever know because you will have left time to perfect the project. Effective delegating involves communication and training. Some tips to keep in mind are:

  • Choose the appropriate person for the task. Are they interested or qualified in the task?
  • Clearly define the responsibilities up front. What is the ultimate goal for the task?
  • Set a deadline for completion
  • Provide a detailed explanation of how it is currently completed
  • Express that you are available should any questions arise
  • Remember, you are delegating the task, not the procedure to get it done. After all, it does not matter how it was done, as long as it is complete and correct!

Benefits received when delegating tasks are:

  • You can go home on time
  • You can spend quality time with your family
  • You have extra time to complete a task or two from your idea file
  • You can spend time on moneymaking activities to grow your business
  • You have assisted growth in the person you delegated a new task to
  • You have time to spend on your personal growth
  • You can take a much-needed vacation

By understanding and implementing these tips, you are sure to delegate your way to more time in your workday.

Delegating: Tip #1

Delegate challenging and meaningful tasks as well as the simple or boring tasks.  Keeping a variety of tasks delegated will ensure your staff members to feel you trust and have faith in their abilities.

Delegating: Tip #2

Do not delegate a task if it can be eliminated entirely.  Ask yourself if the task at hand is necessary.  Are your doing it for yourself, or is it a requirement?  If you are doing it for yourself, you should identify why you are doing it and determine if it is really necessary.

Delegating: Tip #3

If the task is returned by your staff member still needs work, don't rewrite it!  Offer suggestions and let them make the necessary adjustments.
